Kido Keisatsu PATLABOR

"Aprile 1998. Nelle caserme del Secondo Plotone Veicoli Speciali tutti sono in fervente attesa della consegna dei nuovi labor AV-98 Ingram. I robot sono però rimasti bloccati in un ingorgo di traffico e quando arriva una chiamata d'intervento, gli equipaggi si trovano costretti a raggiungere gli Ingram con mezzi di fortuna": comincia in questa rocambolesca maniera la vita del Secondo Plotone Veicoli Speciali, vero protagonista di questa bella serie. Patlabor si inserisce nel filone dei robot "realistici": gli Ingram sono nulla più di normali macchine, mentre i veri protagonisti sono i piloti, i meccanici e tutti quei personaggi che in un modo o nell'altro coadiuvano i labor nei loro interventi. Per questa ragione gli episodi tendono a concentrarsi in particolar modo sui personaggi umani piuttosto che sui robot e non è raro assistere ad interi episodi dove i labor fanno solo da comparse sullo sfondo delle vicende dei personaggi. Il mondo di Patlabor è molto simile al nostro, con i piccoli problemi di ogni giorno che occupano i pensieri dei protagonisti più degli eventuali scontri tra labor. Così al cruento scontro con il temibile labor nero, il Griffon, viene dedicato lo stesso spazio che alla conta per stabilire i turni delle pulizie tra i protagonisti. Certo che, nel Giappone di questo ipotetico 1998, i protagonisti hanno poco tempo per annoiarsi, presi come sono tra un colpo di stato e il ritrovamento di un gattino nella neve, tra una rivolta di labor impazziti e la comparsa di un gigantesco mostro nella baia di Tokyo, tra una serata alle terme e l'incontro con un fantasma molto carino..... La Yamato ha editato in Italia quasi tutto il materiale su Patlabor, ad eccezione della serie televisiva: la prima e la seconda serie di Oav, trasmesse anche da Italia 7, ed il primo film, mentre il secondo è stato importato ad opera della Polygram.
Il mio consiglio spassionato è quello di prendervi tutto (tra l'altro la Yamato ha recentemente rieditato tutta la serie ed il film in edizione economica), ma se non vi fosse possibile cercate almeno di guardare i film, due autentici capolavori ad opera di Mamoru Oshi.

"April, 1998. In the barracks of the Second Special Vehicles Platoon, everybody is anxiously waiting for the delivery of the new labor, the AV-98 Ingram. But the robots are jammed in traffic, and the crew has to reach them using makeshifts": this is the animated beginning of the Second Special Vehicles Platoon, the main characters of this excellent series. Patlabor belongs to the trend of "realistic" robots: the Ingram are nothing more than normal machines, while the pilots, the mechanics and all those who help the labors' interventions are the main characters. For this reason, the plot tend to concentrate particularly on human characters rather than on the robots, and it is  not uncommon to look at entire episodes where the labor operate in the background. The world of Patlabor is very similar to our world, and the small everyday life problems occupy the minds of the heroes more than any battle between labors. So, the same importance is given to the bloody encounter with Griffon, the terrible black labor, than to the count out to decide who will have to do the cleaning.
Certainly, in this hypothetical 1998 in Japan, the main characters have little time to get bored, involved as they are in preventing a "coup d'état" or finding a kitten lost in the snow, in putting down a rising of mad labor or coping with an enormous monster in the bay of Tokio, in spending an evening at the thermal waters or meeting a very nice ghost… 
Almost all Patlabor material has been published in Italy by Yamato, except for the tv series: the first and second Oav series, transmitted also by Italia 7, and the first movie, while the second one has been imported by Polygram.
I dispassionately advise you to buy everything (by the way, Yamato recently re-published all the series and the movies in popular edition), but in case you can't, at least look at the films, two authentic masterpieces by Mamoru Oshi.
